In case you haven't heard there's a new ransomware at the loose called WannaCry , it attacked over 74 countries in the last 24 hours.

There are multiple methods to protect your PC from it

Method 1:

 Update windows

Method 2:

Run cmd as administrator and type:

netsh advfirewall firewall add rule dir=in action=block protocol=TCP localport=135 name="Block_TCP-135"

now press enter, then type:

netsh advfirewall firewall add rule dir=in action=block protocol=TCP localport=445 name="Block_TCP-445"

now press enter.

Method 3:

Run cmd as administrator then type:

dism /online /norestart /disable-feature /featurename:SMB1Protocol

You're welcome :)

I heard about this via BBC News yesterday. Thankfully, it's already over, but it claimed its victims nonetheless.

I try method 3 but how do I know if smb1 is really disabled?

@p3rf

  • Open control panel
  • Choose programs and features
  • Click on Turn windows features on or off
  • Check if SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support is unticked

Edit: You can use this as Method 4 but it will require a restart unlinke methods 2 and 3

@error Thanks but SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support is missing in turn windows features on or off, does that mean I don't have it and I'm safe? Also, do I still need to do method 2 if I do method 3/4?

And to think that they explored NSA tools to make that ransomware. The virus was beyond the normal. Luckily they found accidentaly a way to stop the script temporaly, and tell people to install the update to avoid further damage.

The March Security Rollup added protection against it, and all subsequent security rollups will have that protection as well. You do not need to install 130 updates. But I have to ask, why do you have so many not installed?
